WHY IT MATTERS

Cybercrime losses in Ghana reached GH₵23.3 million in 2024 and an additional GH₵14.9 million in the first half of 2025. Financial losses rose by 17% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, according to CSA data. Online fraud and impersonation accounted for over 90% of losses in the first half of 2025.

Reported cybercrime incidents climbed from 1,317 in the first half of 2024 to 2,008 during the same period in 2025.

Online fraud accounted for 36% of reported cases, followed by cyberbullying (25%), and online blackmail (14%).

24.3 million Ghanaians are currently online, representing an internet penetration rate of 70%. Social media adoption has reached 7.95 million active accounts, equivalent to 22.9% of the population.

Social engineering tactics, fake online shops, brand impersonation, and phishing scams are key methods used by fraudsters. Cybersecurity experts highlight the vulnerability of new digital users and the exploitation of infrastructure weaknesses.

Ghana has made significant progress in cybersecurity development, ranking 3rd in Africa in the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Index. The government plans tougher cybercrime laws to enhance prosecution and deter criminal activity.

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) is leading initiatives such as the Safer Digital Ghana Campaign and the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) to promote online safety and digital literacy. Academia is playing a critical role in research, capacity building, and innovation to support national cyber resilience

Ghana must act now to protect its citizens, empower its youth, and secure its digital future.
