Genius IT Foundation and the Department of Gender have successfully completed a four-week intensive digital skills training program for 47 girls and business women in the Volta Region of Ghana. The training program was focused on providing participants with essential digital skills in website development, graphic designing, and coding, as well as educating them on how to use technology to grow their businesses.
The program’s climax was celebrated on the 8th of March 2023, during the International Women’s Day celebration, with distinguished guests, including the Regional Director of the Department of Gender and the Regional Minister, Hon Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, in attendance. The Minister commended the Department of Gender and the Genius IT Foundation for their efforts in empowering women and girls with digital skills, emphasizing the government’s interest in using STEM education to train problem solvers.
During the event, the Executive Director of the Genius IT Foundation, Mr. Desmond Kitsi, spoke on the topic of “How Digital Literacy can be used to Empower Women for Gender Equality.” He encouraged women to develop a keen interest in STEM and digital skills acquisition, stating that digital skills provide women with unique opportunities, including improving education and training, providing more employment opportunities, and empowering women’s self-expression and networking.
The training program’s participants received special awards signed by the Department of Gender and Genius IT Foundation, and their parents were present to witness their daughters’ progress and express their pride in their accomplishments.
In his speech, the Regional Minister emphasized the need for digital skills acquisition to achieve gender equality and bridge the digital gender gap. He commended the Department of Gender and its partners, including the Genius IT Foundation, Star Ghana Foundation, Project Management Institute, and UNFPA, for their efforts in bridging the digital gap and empowering women with digital skills.
The training program’s success is a significant milestone in the Volta Region’s digital transformation journey, and it highlights the importance of digital skills in achieving gender equality and building wealth. As the Minister noted, the digital marketplace will never be saturated because of innovation, and women must take advantage of this opportunity to develop their competencies and thrive in the digital age.
