FAITHFUL LESSONS IN TECHNOLOGY AND ETHICS

Our FUTECH KIDS couldn’t have ended the week on a better note. On Friday, September 22nd, 2023, we had a remarkable encounter with Reverend Adika, the Resident Pastor of the Global Evangelical Church in Ho Fiave.

It’s often said that men of God possess a profound depth of knowledge and insight, and Reverend Adika was no exception. What made this encounter truly special was his ability to seamlessly blend his spiritual wisdom with the ever-evolving world of technology, using it as a tool to impart moral values to our young minds.

As Reverend Adika shared his wisdom with our eager group of students, it became evident that many of them harboured ambitious career goals. However, upon closer examination, it was clear that some of these aspirations were driven by misguided motives – a discovery that elicited laughter from the Reverend and the kids alike. It was evident that these goals would likely undergo numerous transformations until the young learners truly grasped the “why” and “what” behind their ambitions, a crucial part of our Leadership Module.

In the world of education, it’s easy to get swept away by the allure of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects. However, Reverend Adika’s message lecture to the kids served as a poignant reminder that teaching these skills without instilling strong moral values is akin to training potential terrorists for the future. The implications of this statement hung heavily in the air, causing us all to reflect deeply on the importance of ethics and character development in education.

He urged the kids to consider the ethical issues of our time and how they should be at the very core of their efforts to build their capacities, especially in the field of technology. Reverend Adika reminded us that this was not merely an educational concern but a matter of national security. After all, a society with individuals who possess great technological prowess but lack moral grounding is a society at risk.

As we wrapped up the session, the children left with a newfound appreciation for the importance of ethics in their educational journey. Reverend Adika’s visit was a reminder that knowledge is not just about facts and figures but also about character, values, and the impact we make on the world around us.

Our FUTECH KIDS left that Friday afternoon not only with dreams and aspirations but also with a greater understanding of the responsibility that comes with knowledge and technology—a lesson they will carry with them as they navigate the ever-changing landscape of the future.
